Description
What an interesting subject, she of the unibrow and unrepentant mustache, Mexican folk dresses, flower headdresses and chunky jewelry! Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is considered to be one of Mexico’s most important artists; her work was very personal, much of it self-portraits, and often surreal. She was a very complicated woman, bisexual, and greatly affected by bad health due to polio as a child and the life-long, debilitating effects of a bus crash at age 18. She was married—twice!—to fellow artist Diego Rivera, with whom she had a contentious relationship. The recurring themes in her art centered on feminism, Mexican nationalism, and questions of personal identity. She died at age 47, most likely by her own hand, likely because of unmitigated pain and the fragility of her health.
