Title
Gypsy Man -- Portrait of Romany Gypsy Man Smoking
Artist
Jayne Somogy
Medium
Drawing - Pastels, Charcoal On 98-lb. Tinted Paper
Description
A stylized, romanticized rendition of a handsome man from the Romany culture. "Gypsy" is the term most people use for this ethnic group, but it is actually a pejorative term that is generally NOT used by the Roms themselves. One of my artistic goals is to present and preserve the various indigenous cultures and peoples around the world, many of whom are in danger of becoming "extinct."

Really resembles Johnny Depp. Beautiful regardless.
Jayne Somogy replied:
Now that you mention it, I guess he does resemble Depp; not my intention though. Thank you for the comment, and the support!

Lovely drawing, even though you say 'stylized' it seems to really capture a period of time gone by, just by your style. It is really nice on the tinted paper. Very nice! LF
Jayne Somogy replied:
Thank you for the wonderful words! I love the ancient civilizations like you do (although I don't have the educational background in them that you have). You are obviously a gifted artist; I especially like your portraits, your whimsical animals, and your Mexican prints are "to die for"!
