Title
Pinhead Friends -- Portrait of 2 Developmentally Disabled Men
Artist
Jayne Somogy
Medium
Drawing - Charcoal, Pastels On Stretched Canvas
Description
This picture depicts the sweet friendship between two men who are afflicted with microcephaly, a neurological disorder where the head and brain are abnormally small. This is the disorder that is caused by the Zika Virus when it infects pregnant women. These individuals sometimes are developmentally disabled and in the early part of the 20th century they were referred to as "pinheads" and often employed as "freaks" in sideshows. However, the sideshow gave them a purpose in life and the sideshow folk often became their surrogate family. And yes, these ARE MEN; most likely they were dressed that way due to incontinence. One of my artistic goals is to present and preserve history by portraying anonymous or famous figures from current or past times that typify their particular culture and time in history.
