Description
Elizabeth, England’s queen from 1558 until her death at age 69 in 1603, was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, whom her father had beheaded when Elizabeth was 3 years old. Often referred to as the “Virgin Queen”—because she never married—Elizabeth became queen at age 25 and had already led a life filled with political and palace intrigue, including a year’s imprisonment in the Tower of London, and rumors of romantic liaisons—all of which continued throughout her 44-year reign. Many people believe she never married so that she could maintain control of her country, but lack of a husband did not forestall her from being a flirt, and she loved the attention accorded to her as the monarch. Well-educated and an accomplished writer and speaker, she is considered one of England’s greatest monarchs, providing the country with enough stability that literature and the arts flourished. I have drawn her here in her later years, well past the flower of youth and beauty; her jewelry is comprised of actual acrylic jewels, pearls & rhinestones glued onto heavy watercolor paper.
