Nina Mae -- African-American Actress Portrait
Artist
Jayne Somogy
Medium
Drawing - Colored Pencil On 98-lb. Toned Paper
Description
This is a portrait of Nina Mae McKinney(1912-1967). I'll bet you've never heard of her; I hadn't until just recently, and that's too bad. She was one of the first African-American film stars, and obviously an extravagantly beautiful woman. Most of her success came in Europe because 1930's racist Hollywood was afraid to use her in glamorous starring roles. Did I exaggerate her eyes for this portrait? I did not! Even though I often do that, her eyes were naturally that large and gorgeous. She was known as "The Black Garbo."

Mario Carini
Gotta love those expressive eyes! A lovely portrait indeed and a good medium.
Jayne Somogy replied:
Thank you, Mario. I think the portrait turned out fairly well, but yet is somewhat less than her exceptional beauty.

Michel Verhoef
A great discovery Jayne !! Beautiful eyes indeed....and done so well again...:-)
Jayne Somogy replied:
Thank you so much, Michel--she's actually even much prettier than I made her here! I may do another portrait of her eventually--such a great subject.
