Artist's Description
“Valley girls” don’t come only from California. This valley girl is from the Omo Valley in northeastern Africa (mainly Ethiopia) and is of the Suri tribe. The young girls of this tribe paint themselves with white clay paint in very decorative patterns and utilize the local flora and fauna, as well as “found items” (such as bottle caps) to adorn themselves, often with quite a spectacular and beautiful result. Many women from this tribe, along with the Mursi tribe, also have their lower teeth removed at puberty and begin the process of stretching the lower lip in order to wear a lip plate—a “look” that is strange and probably not very attractive to the Western eye.

I create whimsical, graphic, stylized, often Asian-inspired & sometimes jeweled or embellished interpretations of people, animals, ethnic subjects, objects/still lifes. Art, like life, should SPARKLE! I sign my work 'SOMOGYI' the ethnically-correct version of my Hungarian surname, and I often incorporate my signature into the design of the art itself. I earned a degree in theater from the U. of Wisconsin, an additional degree, summa cum laude, in fashion design from FIDM/Los Angeles, and turned to creating art seriously in 2014 upon retiring from jobs in office administration and free time spent dancing, singing and acting.
